A personal message

When I was in my late twenties, I worked on this project for a pharmaceutical company called Valeant. Back then, I was still in my Ph.D. program, and I was helping management study the network of unit relationships to help organizational restructuring. The company pioneered the strategy of slashing down R&D costs to expand margins and use cash to acquire small pharma labs. The company valuation reached $650 billion as the stock price rose from $8 to $340. I thought it was genius. Only later on did I realize the dark side of their strategy. After acquiring a business, they would raise the pills’ price by 1,000 times, making it prohibitive for patients to afford cures. Once the world found out, the company lost 97% of its value. I understood then that business can be a force for good or bad, and I wanted to help companies make good decisions.
